KPop Demon Hunters

I went in for the soundtrack and stayed for the animation. A film that's a pure pleasure to both watch and listen to.

2025 · Musical / Action · Maggie Kang & Chris Appelhans · Netflix

I went in for the soundtrack — and stayed for how good the animation turned out to be. They even animated the subtle way a woman's hips shift as she walks. No surprise: this is the same crew behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The setup

The story is set in a world where demons feed on human souls, kept in check by demon hunters. Across generations, chart-topping girl groups (Huntrix) have used their fame to guard a place called the Honmoon — the gate that seals the demons away.

Care in both image and sound

Both the character work and the soundtrack selection show real care:

  • Visuals: borrows the camera language of girl-group music videos
  • Character design: blends the signature looks of male and female idols
  • Music: brought in TWICE and seasoned producers

The result is a stunning visual style, distinctive character designs, and songs that lodge in your head. The characterization isn't fully fleshed out, but it's still a film that's a pure pleasure to both watch and listen to.

Hoping for a sequel

I really hope this level of success pushes the team to make a second film — I'd love to learn more about the musical styles of the earlier generations of girl groups.
