Wednesday

More than the mystery, I loved watching her heart get pried open. Wednesday's whole essence is those cutting, spot-on remarks.

2022 · Horror Comedy · Tim Burton · Netflix

Setting the scene

Wednesday is a spin-off of The Addams Family. In its first week it beat Stranger Things season four in viewing hours — huge buzz, generally good reviews — and thanks to this show, lead actress Jenna Ortega gained tens of millions of Instagram followers (absolutely wild!).

A few (few, few) thoughts

From not adjusting to loving it. Never having seen The Addams Family, in episode one I found Wednesday and her family's twisted behavior and remarks a bit hard to get used to — but then fell in love with them for exactly that, and before I knew it I'd sped through the whole show. Wednesday's very essence is those biting, spot-on remarks~ (I super envy how she can be so herself, but she's also lucky to meet a kindred spirit willing to keep trying to understand her.)

The sleuth girl & the big bad are too weak?! My judgment vanished while watching; I kept getting led along by Wednesday, and later her deductions were repeatedly overturned. It gives the plot lots of twists, but it seems the "teen-genius Sherlock" label is only half right, haha. The big bad who worked so hard to resurrect a descendant gets taken down in two or three moves? And it's a pity Wednesday's ancestor's blessing didn't come into play. Conclusion: the finale felt a little slapdash, so unsatisfying! Still, all these bugs don't diminish how genuinely great the show is. Every character's personality comes through!

Wrap-up

→ More than the mystery, I loved the process of her heart being opened up!

Family 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦. Though the Addamses are odd in thought and twisted in deed, and never raised Wednesday into a law-abiding, kind, considerate "normal person," this unusual upbringing forged her fearless-of-others'-eyes, world-weary-yet-clear-eyed character. Sadly, most people today get assimilated into "socialized" beings — wearing the mask so long they forget their original face — so Wednesday's personality is truly precious (as long as it doesn't harm others). From this you can tell her parents love her deeply in "their own way," which isn't without warmth 🖤

Friendship 👭. I love the friendship line between Enid and Wednesday. Enid is like the sun, and this giant iceberg Wednesday, under the sun's shine, will melt one day no matter how long it takes.

Romance 💓. I never expected to get charmed watching this (rare pink bubbles for me) — and the later dark turn caught me off guard too; the writers really surprised me there!

"You should look for someone who understands you, not try to become what the other person likes."

Sometimes we want too badly to be loved, even losing ourselves in love — but if you've lost yourself, what's left for the other person to love? And Wednesday basically reaps without sowing, killing two birds with one stone (without even throwing the stone) — such a bargain 🤣🤣

Where "Wednesday" comes from. The 19th-century English nursery rhyme Monday's Child — "Wednesday's child is full of woe" (echoing the first episode's title).

Where "Addams" comes from. The surname of the original cartoonist, whose full name is Charles Addams — such a simple reason, who knew, haha.

Some lines I loved:

"Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it."

"You taught me how to be strong and independent, how to survive in a world full of betrayal and prejudice. Because of you I understood how important it is not to lose myself. So as far as raising children goes, I think you've done well enough."

"No one turns to evil out of a longing for evil — they just mistake it for the happiness and goodness they're chasing."

"The world is a place I have to endure; my personal philosophy is survival of the fittest."

"Coincidence the first time, a hint the second, evidence the third."

Later I found out Jenna Ortega had appeared in You! At the time I was too absorbed in Joe, plus the styling difference, so I really had no impression of her 😅
